last day of 2012

It was wonderful year in 2012. It’s last day today. We did establish many places in the world. No regret!! for next year, of cause we are on the track!!

Stay tuned and check out our progress at http://www.facebook.com/SnowMobileTripOnArctic

A Happy New Year!!

Dream plans for next 3 years! -part 1: vertical dreams-

Since 100 years ago Nansen’s era, winter is the greatest time for thinking about spring plan, new ideas and many exciting thinking!! Especially in February, that is perfect because little too early to action, but sun shine getting stronger and daylight getting longer…

I will try to show some my dream plans or dream expeditions next several blogs. Here is first one “the vertical dreams”!

1. Denali (Mt. McKinley) stations!

We are going to Denali next several years to install temperature monitoring stations. Three stations are planning near Windy Conner, High Camp and Denali Pass. For this year, we focussed at the Windy Conner (lowest spot). Hope we can get permission!!!

2. Kilimanjaro deep boreholes

Last 3 years, we were looking for the permafrost in Africa. Kilimanjaro is one great place to this research. We did have several boreholes up to 4m. I would like to deeper borehole at the permafrost site, means near the summit crater. Hope we will carry up all of the heavy equipments and doing serious drilling up there!! And… I love to go with as many as Students and Teachers to share Africa’s highest snow mountain!

Test drill at the summit crater, Kilimanjaro

3. Peruvian Andes deep drillng

Yes, we should drill through permafrost at Nevado Chachani! Also we will work at Corpuna, Misti as well. Staying 5000m drilling 6000m!

4. Remote site drilling at Izatccihualt, Mexico

We did small borehole last two years. It time to work deeper station!

Once I could finish this missions, we all have serious permafrost monitoring stations in tropical mountains on our planet! And also we will see  the temperature one of the coldest mountains on Earth!!

For next, I will talk about the horizontal plan!!

The Polar Night Express!

Dream plans for next 3 years! -part 2: horizontal dreams-

Two of the things bother me last two decades, it’s Northwest and Northeast passages… It’s fun to think about it always how to? I thought  sailboat was good idea, but not really, because shallow water, not much time spend in communities. I thought small motor boat was good like we did  last year in Southeast Alaska, but not really. I thought Hobbie Cat type of Catamaran was good, I fell still good…But summer is too short and school is closed. these are still possible and maybe very exciting to do. But it’s one big missing piece of all of these methods for me!!

Yes, It’s the moon!

I need the moon. I need beautiful orange full moon rising from frozen ocean! Travel without moon is less dramatic and feel like similar borehole without datalogger! (doesn’t much work  itself!) I should be back to snow-machine combined with kite ski!! It will be a more reasonable and reality. As well as Nansen, I still dreamed traveling on snow and ice under the blue moon light. The life without this dream I am unable to find solutions… “The Polar Night Express expedition” this must be the solution!

Detail schedule and tactics are still under developing. But about (only!) 50 schools are in these area (NWT, Nunavut, Quebec). Yellow dots shows proposed school site and red dots shows already existing Canadian schools (Yukon Territory)

I open of my old  book called “sailing directions for the Arctic Ocean”. This book had all of the sailing related information which is Arctic sailor man’s bible in 80s published by US defense Mapping Agency. The major winter wind direction was W to NW around Northwest Passage that will be ideal for kite!!
