Legendary Pingo “Weather Pingo”, Alaska

Weather Pingo (the other name IBP Pingo) was one of the famous research pingo in 1980s. The entire core sample is still preserved in New Hampshire. Recently, I got stable isotope results from this ice core, which is very interesting signals containing. However, whole this summer long I cannot conform this location. I asked this location to key persons during drilling campaign in 1983. There are some miss match for conformations such as the shape of pingo, size of pipe remain, location of the pad (access to the pingo) or standing water location.

As result, this is weather pingo, that next of “new” gravel pad!

You can see old gravel pad in Google Earth(north of pingo). This old gravel pad does not have gravel anymore, but has contrast damaged ice wedge polygons. The pipe diameter, old bigger pipe is hiding underground!  So now, everybody agree this as Weather Pingo! and new pad made new standing water pattern!

zebra horse

I should explain little more about “zebra”. This is one of the TunnelMan ep5 missions. So this is the horse not real zebra. The species of this horse is “Norwegian fjord” (picture left). His name is Klondike, 4 years old smart horse, part of our family. We put water washable black color (that people use their hair or skin in Halloween time..) stripes on his thick fur (picture right).

After the filming, we changed contrast of the picture making more looks Zebra!! like picture below!!

Mission “Zebra”

Last a few days, I could not have a time to sleep too much for many things! One of the reasons, we have to finish filming TunnelMan EP5  as much as possible. Thanks for my friends at IARC to join cave man shots without any closing!! We will show some picture sometimes, if university agree!?  For today, It is nice sunny day. This is the day for filming African follow up dreams!? So, we need Zebra!! Mission Zebra is continue to on!!

Enjoy! this picture!!

Watershed School

I visited Watershed School Today. This is new school for Fairbanks and 7th grade students have  great knowledge and nice question!  It’s small one class school but big potential!

Frost tube was 21cm. So far we have little snow year, so ground freezing is advance.

You will see water-ice interface at light picture, that frost tube tell us today’s freezing depth!

TunnelMan Episode 5 going great! but still need time…

We are working hard(?!) as caveman or walking around 70s archeologist (like Indy Johns)!! So far we finish filmed in Andes, Africa, Valdez Alaska… But I would say 35% done. Teresa keep trying to sing five songs for us. So it will be great fun story this last episode. We will have waiting great (and very funny) filming this week, that called code name “Zebra” . Hope I can show you some picture within a week!!

Stay tune!

The Full Moon

I wrote about Sunset here in my blog last week (October 15), so I should mention another important for our (my) life….The moon rise! I believe these two are most dramatic events on our planet, that happening always which is nice…Again like sunset, some reason, I like full moon rise instead of full moon set!!? I think many people agree this???!!! For instance, people would like beginning of the night instead of  the beginning of the day, especially the bright blue night like tonight that feel something, doesn’t it?

Gee, nice full moon rise at University of Alaska Fairbanks campus this evening at 5pm!! My hart beat up I would like to run!

My favorite moon rise at Pt.Barrow. The moon is only the object that different color  against surrounding blue world!

Another favorite one, from Unalakleet.

We would like to work in full moon night!!

Frost season

Stand alone frost season is almost over now! New snow cover the frost then new condensation on the snow… going to less vivid season?!

Recently, ducks(?) stay in Chena River during winter, because of open water all year around by the city’s wast heat. As a result, this makes beautiful frosting along the river side!!

Pingo looks landscape!?

It seems snow staying until next spring in Fairbanks. Most of the skier or dog musher are waiting in this moment! Some of the neibour was driving snowmachine at front yard in circle all day. The other hand, people start talking about escaping south…It may be the time of most diverse opinions for people’s mind. For me, I am still middle of field season… snow make me a little bit difficult driving, and drilling…Hope this makes at end up slowdown. I am grad(?!) we have a seasons! I used to live sub-tropical island where less season than here! where was no time to rest all year around!!

This picture is Karst landscape from Bohol Island (Philippine). Limestone made many interesting and exciting landscapes!!! This is one of them, all mounds are same hight and shape, it looks like a lot of pingos there!!

The Watershed School of Fairbanks

I picked Bob (Bolton) up from his office this afternoon to install frost tube at the Watershed School. It was quick typical “drill and go” process for us. We put two frost tube and said “hi” to science teacher then going to hot bathtub at gym!! It was nice day!
