Permafrost News Vol. 8-3

Dear Science Teachers and Principals,

Thank you for supporting our program. This is the last newsletter for this semester!  Here is a recent update of our program and related events:

1.  Permafrost and Active layer (Frost Tube) network is now expanded to the Canadian Arctic. Following communities are now in our group: Aklavik, Inuvik, Tuktuyaktuk, Paulatuk, Kugluktuk, Cambridge Bay, Gjoa Haven, Kugaaruk, Taloyoak, Repulse Bay, Hall Beach, Igoolik, Iqaluit. 2. Also we will have a photo/movie presentation of this trip planning first week of June at UAF. More info please check: www.uaf.edu/permafrost or contact kyoshikawa@alaska.edu

3. Community based permafrost book “Permafrost in Our Time (2013 edition)” is ready for electrical reviewing. Please check your school/village page. Let me know any corrections or comments. We will have final page proof and printing in this summer, hopefully we will deliver hardcopy each village in this fall!!

4. Congratulations!! Students from our Western Siberian community “Novy Urengoy” awarded the frost tube project on the 2nd Yamal Environmental Forum in April 2013. It will be nice to hear this good news!! We had a US award before, president Obama invited one of the frost tube schools to the Whitehouse as part of science fair. Please let me know any award you had from this program!!

5. Finally, we are middle of the spring logger/frost tube maintenance trips. Please let me know, if you need fixing or talking classroom etc.! Here is rough plan:
May, June: Southern Baikal, South Central Alaska, Interior Alaska, North Slope
June: Southeast & Southwest Alaskan communities
June-July: Aleutians, Bristol Bay area
