Oldest permafrost borehole in the world!

Here is oldest permafrost monitoring borehole in Siberia, maybe in the world! It was  drilled in 1827 depth 140m, measured in 1830s by Shuergin, then remeasured by Middendorf in 1845. About 50 years later, during first IPY time, 6m shaft was dug in Barrow Alaska that would be the first one in US but only 6m. We admire the history of the Russian permafrost research.20140522-165508.jpg

Mirny and Chernoshesk

Mirny has big open pit Diamond mine similar like South Africa. This Kinberlite mine is 414m deep. Permafrost thickness is about 300m so lower 100m is permeable layer that groundwater seeping out.

Chernoshesk is hydrologic power plant town. part of the Dam itself making stronger by using artificial permafrost
