Another yummy food I had a chance to eat at Wales. They call this as “Kauk” (thanks Jelyn for spell correction!).

Alaska! we have many interesting and smart way to keep food. I, Japanese back ground, had similar taste and overlap many way to preserve… But here, permafrost country, fish (whale) and frozen ground, this is beautiful combination.

New Fox tunnel test drilling was completed this weekend. 9 holes are done including lake bottom. Thaw bulb (talik) at the lake  was unexpectedly shallow (only 5.3m) and rest of the deeper ground was frozen.

I just back from Kotzebue! It was still cold and windy there, but just time for Kobuk 440 and spring festival.

This week, we really cannot anything for school because of state wide test. We did install soil moisture sensor that Japanese NSF program.

Kivalina community has beautiful big cellar (Sigluaq)! This is may biggest one in state.

Test drilling campaign start for new permafrost tunnel. Cold Region Research and Engineering Laboratory (US Army) plan to make new tunnel this year. Test drilling helps alot for understanding sediments  and thermal conditions of the tunnel site.

We checked frost tube around Anchorage area yesterday. Many place start thawing at near ground surface (below snow) several centimeters. Seasonal frost depth was 28cm deep at downtown (Denali Elem.), 64cm (polaris K12), 148cm (Aquarian), 111cm (Begich) and 28cm (Wasilla).

Big Circle (Fairbanks-Delta JCT-Glennalen-Vladez-Glacier View-Anchorage-Wasilla-Cantwell-Denali NP-Healy- Anderson-Fairbanks) in April trip start yesterday. It was beautiful blue sky in Fairbanks but coastal communities are cloudy most of the time.
