Snowstorm in Mexico!

It was very strange November so far! November is best season for Mexican high mountain! because no more wet season, not real winter yet. But this November is like a September (our guide Jorge’s comment). It is true every afternoon we had shower and lightning!

We had about 5 hour walk from La Hoya to 19th hut. We were lucky to avoid serious snow storm. Storm was started after noon to mid night! But we did affect next day! We wake up at 4am and start climbing under the moonlight (and flash light)

You see still super-cold structure kind of lime.

Popo is behind me

I said we wake up at 4am. but this is not true. Cabin have many rats, when it dark. They are very aggressive and not scar human. Rats find my mix nuts in my back pack. They are inside of back pack. also move around sleeping bag, climbing sleeping bag. That really problem all night!! We are grad to leave hut at 4:30am!

Popocatépetl climatizing

We left Mexico City at 7am this morning. But we do not have enough time to go to the drill site! We used half day of this time to altitude adjustment. We climb half way of Popo (Popocatépetl) 2nd highest and active volcano in Mexico.

David had hard time of adjust jet rag because he is from Spain yesterday.

Weather is not great at this time, rain, snow, lightning…

Mexico City

About 12 hours of travel, I arrived Mexico City. It is not bad only 3 hours from LA.

ALASKA airline flew over Baja, beautiful lagoon!?

then desert dune!

Then unkown coastal town in Mexico!

Finally Mexico City, the biggest city in the world.

Also high! 2240m elevation, I am already headache!

Good news is we do have everything here at hotel safely!!

Alaska’s communities

I have a time to  look at old pictures this weekend. Here is some digest!

Spring snow melt at Beautiful small town “Tatitlek” in Prince William Sounds

Early spring in Kotzebue, the time for Kobuk 440 dog race!

One of the most remote community “Diomede” at the middle of Bering Straight.

Little Diomede (USA) (right) and Big Diomede (Russia) is left

Fall Scammon Bay

Spring Kenai Peninsula at Seward

Freeze up Minto Flat

Winter Koyukuk River  at Hughes

Beautiful spring at Port Valdez

And town of Valdez

The month of Kinai River and Kenai

Fall storm at Wainwright

The mouth of Yukon, Nunam Iqua (Sheldon Point)

Koyukuk meet Yukon at Koyukuk

much more picture will publish with our temperature book next year!!

air charger

Air charger makes booster for power up engine from last year’s experience. I do make little more seriously this year. This 12V battery operate fan (taking from electric air pump for inflatable boat) some how works!! it is not compressed air (not rising pressure), but smooth intake without air filter (resistance) seems link to power up!

Strategic plan for Izatccihualt

I am almost ready to go Mexico. The preparation is always best time of the expedition!! Especially, if the team was bigger more share time together that affect rest of life! So, before talking about my strategic plan, I should point out the reasons of the failure last year (https://ffky.edublogs.org/2010/11/07/itaccihuatl/);

1. Geology is not ideal (hard lava layer everywhere), I lost all of the diamond bits!

2. Thin air makes engine power significantly down.

3. no water, altitude sickness physical conditions problem

This is my idea for this year:

1. I look at over 1000 pictures around Izatccihualt. It possibly two spots accumulate thicker ash layer at the summit crater. We need carry drill rig up another 350m than last year. But maybe only place we can drill by portable rig.

2. We use dry bit this year. Bit may heat up quickly, but site will be next of the glacier.

3. high power engine with percussion/rotation drill Assembly

This figure shows target altitude (about 5000m) has half of air from sea level. I brought right weight 26cc displacement (cc) Tanaka engine last year. This year I order 40cc displacement (cc) Tanaka engine.

The difference is 1.5 times bigger displacement, 1.6 time stronger horse power, 1.75 times higher torque. Power will be  about half by the altitude, so just about 26cc displacement (cc) Tanaka engine power we will get at mountain using 40cc engine.

We rebuild 40cc engine with SDS plus hammer drill assembly then off corse we replace best grease for low temperature (-40-350 degree F).

Total weight is getting little heavier than last year, we hirer guide/porter this year for lift up equipments and also have some technical climbing part.

Body physical condition is hard to predict, we plan to quick climb this year. Hope we can descendent before symptoms occurring.

Georama Anchorage vs. Fairbanks

Here are some picture from Alaska Airline jet to processed georama looking!

Gillian square and the OpenArms in Fairbanks

Downtown Anchorage (it is nice mountain and water…) no snow yet!

Downtown Fairbanks (we don’t have a mountain,  a ocean… but we have Chena River.)

zoooom in”downtown Fairbanks”!!
