Then Senator Mark Begich coming later to talk and answer questions!!

NSF

I did meet our Permafrost outreach program manger at National Science Foundation (NSF) building, when I have a chance to stop by NSF. National Science Foundation is (maybe) most important organization about money for scientist to research.

ALSD (Apollo Lunar Surface Drill)

I am at Washington DC, nation’s capital!

One of the purpose to visit here, I would like to see ALSD! I straight to visit National Air & Space Museum. They drilled lunar surface about 10 feet using electric 456W power drill. it similar to use today but much smaller power to drill!! Here is real one. Unfortunately, I could not touch (even far to see) this module.

You will find final report to following link: http://ntrs.nasa.gov/archive/nasa/casi.ntrs.nasa.gov/19690002958_1969002958.pdf

HDR processing

I think many of recent camera has HDR function including iPhone4. This is one of the 21 century’s best ideas to develop pictures. Here is some explanation from Wikipedia:In image processingcomputer graphics, and photographyhigh dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminancebetween the lightest and darkest areas of an image than current standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wide dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight.

This is example at Monument Valley restaurant.

Great Salt Lake

We are arrived Salt Lake City! We plan to fly in Washington DC about 5 days from here and then continue to drive Yellow Stone, Canadian Rocky, Sitka…after June 16th

Salt Lake is about 5X thicker salt than the ocean. We could float, reading book on the water.

However, a lot of nuts here!

Antelope Island beach, buffalo was walking along the beach.

South shore of Great Salt Lake, there are many dead bird on beach and water, It hard to swim!?

Dried fish on shore!!!!! The biggest animals in this lake suppose to brine shrimp (1cm or less), as know as  “sea monkey”. Why this fish is here?? This maybe begging of big discovery? or just coming from fresh water inflow far from here?

Crater -Midway, Utah-

Midway is very unique place. It is hard to believe only an hour away from Salt Lake City. Town looks very much Switzerland. Swiss immigrant made this town.

The crater!! this is very unique morphology I have never seen before. Ca rich warm spring 94-98dF (34-36dC) re-crystalized (?) dome shape. It looks very much pingo shape!!

The biggest dome is 55′ (16.5m) high and somebody made lateral tunnel in 1996 to access hot spring pool.

Dead Horse Point, Upper Canyonlands NP

When we start this travel, it was new moon. Moon became brighter and brighter. we could see ground now. but still great stars!

Dead horse point was used to catch wild horse using this narrow (50m?) rim at Colorado Plateau.

North side of the Canyonlands NP is cooler and nice view.

Green River (below) meet Colorado River (above) at this point.

Moab rock shop!!

Moab, this town is not like other Utah. Most of the restrant  sell beer and many coffee shop. One of the impressive store is “Rock Shop”. My children love this!

Strong wind made several wild fire today near the town.
